Travel with Mona, in Train through Switzerland

We flew to Geneva in August, supposedly the warmest month in Europe and landed through dark clouds and pouring rain. My first impression wasn’t the best.

Geneva is well-known as the headquarters
of Europe’s United Nations and Red Cross

From Geneva we boarded the train to Zermatt, in southern Switzerland, a mountain resort renowned for skiing, climbing and hiking.

Zermatt’s main street, Bahnhofstrasse is lined with boutique shops, hotels and restaurants, and also has a lively after-ski scene.
No combustion engine vehicles are allowed in Zermatt. In fact, this Swiss municipality has been free of cars for most of its history. In 1961, the citizens voted to uphold the ban.
After two delightful days in Zermatt, we boarded the Glacier Express Bahnhofstrasse.
The town, at an elevation of around 1,600m, lies below the iconic, pyramid-shaped Matterhorn peak.
The slopes of Matterhorn present the magnificent beauty of the landscape and nature. You can enjoy skiing, snowboarding during the winter or hiking during the summer.
The Glacier Express train has panoramic sealed windows all the way to the roof.

A journey with the Glacier Express: The Glacier Express is a direct train from Zermatt to St. Moritz. The train is also referred to as the ‘slowest express train in the world’: the journey takes about 8 hours. There is a good reason for this slow pace: the train squeezes its way through the Alps, through narrow valleys, tight curves, 91 tunnels, and across 291 bridges, allowing us to admire breathtaking views.

St. Moritz: A tiny Swiss mountain town with a big, glitz-infused name, StMoritz is the winter getaway that made the ski holiday a high-life ideal.

In Winter
In winter the lake is frozen and becomes a skating rink

From St. Moritz that was outrageously expensive, we traveled by train to Zurich.

The city of Zurich, a global center for banking and finance, lies at the north end of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland. The picturesque lanes of the central Altstadt (Old Town), on either side of the Limmat River, reflect its pre-medieval history. Waterfront promenades like the Limmatquai follow the river toward the 17th-century Rathaus (town hall).

A view of the Old Town

A delightful place for children as they enjoy a train ride.

A waterfront promenade

In Zermatt and Zurich, we ate some of the best pastries I’ve ever tasted. Their bread pudding and apple strudel were out of this world.

After a week touring Switzerland, we boarded the train one more time from Zurich to Strasbourg and Paris. But that’s a story for another time.

NOT READY YET – The Senator’s Family, book 4

They were high school sweethearts in their senior year. The top of the class nerd and the dashing athlete. She helped him with math problems and he helped her shed her bashfulness. In between homework and torrid sex, they shared their goals for a successful future: no marriage, no children, no family, until they realize their dreams.
They meet eighteen years later at a hospital fundraising event. When Ethan Dutton, now a millionaire contractor recognizes the gorgeous Dr. Elyana Matteo, a brilliant pediatric cardio-surgeon, he bets $50,000 at an auction to open the dance with her.
He wants to date her. Elyana has no time for fun. Sheโ€™s a widow with a teenage daughter and triplet toddlers, and a very busy career. Ethan whoโ€™s never taken no for an answer, asks to visit the boysโ€™ daycare center and soon offers to remodel her old mansion. The boys adore him and Elyana falls again under his charm.
But their past threatens to destroy their present…
Can they forgive the selfishness of their youth?
Can they make room for unconditional love?

Writing Police Procedural

There are a lot of writers out there that enjoy writing police procedural, and romantic suspense in the crime world. I’m one of them, but I have the unique ability to write it with more knowledge than a lot of writers because I lived it first hand.

At the age of twenty-nine, I decided to go to the police academy. At the age of thirty, I not only graduated but landed a job as a police officer in a small township. When I first started there, they only had four full-time officers, and several part-time officers, but like most areas in our county, growth hit us, and we quickly expanded.

I worked the street for many years, driving thousands of miles, and responding to an array of emergencies. From noise complaints, animal issues, car crashes, medical calls, harassment, chasing Emu’s off the roadways, to domestics, shootings, assaults, and homicides.

I saw it all. Sometimes I would laugh after a call, sometimes I’d cry. Many times, the people I dealt with stayed with me for days, sometimes weeks after. A few of the incidents that I responded to have haunted me, even years later.

The strike of a match brings me back to an explosion. The sound of a little girl giggling reminds me of a child abuse case. Driving past an open window can remind me of crawling inside to check a woman for a pulse after she was shot. These are just some of my own personal PTSD issues.

In my final years as a police officer, I was an internationally certified Crime Scene Investigator and the first detective that our police department had ever had. I loved my job, thrived on it, but after a second serious concussion, I was no longer able to do the job safely or with the intensity that I once had.

But I use the memories to create stories that entertain and educate readers. One of the series that I write, The Twisted Love Serie is a super intense, crime drama with seriously twisted plots and dark romance that I write with a good friend of mine, Amy Manemann.

I have spent a lot of time focusing on the nitty-gritty aspects of the police work and keeping the intense timelines on track. The first two books, Love Lorn and Love Torn, are novellas and give you the back story to the two female detectives, Kali Mann and Evie Harper, that the 9 book series focuses on. Both of those books are FREE to readers!

Love Inked, the third book in the series, is the first full-length novel and when Kali and Evie come together as partners, things get a little out of control. This series is intense, dark, emotional, graphic, suspenseful, sexy (very sexy), and continues from one book to the next like episodes of your favorite television series!

My grandchildren’s favorite meal

My children and the extended family children and grandchildren started eating cannelloni at a very young age, and grew up calling it their favorite meal. I usually prepare it in advance, freeze it, and do the final cooking just before serving. It’s always a winner at family reunion and big holidays.

Cannelloniย  Recipe

  • Prepare the mix:
  1. 3 eggs
  2. 1 ยพ cups of 2% milk
  3. Tsp of butter 1 cup of flour

Mix together in a blender or mixer.ย

  • Prepare the pancakes (or crรจpes)
  1. Use an electric skillet or any other type but adjust the stove temperature to 400o ย
  2. Melt ยฝ a Tsp of butter in the skillet at 400oย
  3. Measure ยผ cup of the mix and pour over the melted butterย
  4. Spread evenly in the skilletย
  5. Remove when cooked and slid in a plateย
  6. Repeat until the whole mix is made into pancakes
  7. You usually get 10 big pancakes with one dose of mix.
  8. I like to cut all the pancakes in half.
  • Prepare the filling
  1. 1 lb of ground beefย
  2. 1 small onionย
  3. 1 tsp all spiceย
  4. Salt and pepperย
  5. 1 cup Ragu tomato sauce

Darken and cook the ground beef, onion and spices, until well cooked. Add the sauce and simmer till the meat is done. Set aside.

  • Rolling the cannelloni
  1. Use a clean plate. Arrange one half pancake on it.
  2. Transfer a Tsp of ground meat over the pancake and roll it over to form a cannelloni.

Repeat with the rest of the pancakes. With this dose of mix you can prepare about 20 small cannellonis or 10 big ones.

  • Cooking

The tomato sauce and sprinkled parmesan cheese still needed to be added when this picture was taken.

  1. Spray the the pan with Pam Brush the bottom with tomato sauce.
  2. Arrange the cannellonis in a 9×13 pan in two rows.
  3. Pour enough tomato sauce to cover each cannelloni
  4. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese or Romano cheese.
  5. Bake at 300o for 20 minutes.

Bon appรฉtit.

Here is Bosty, my grandchildren’s dog waiting for Grandma to have him taste whatever she’s cooking that smells so good.ย ย

I use some of my recipes in my romance novels, whenever I have a grandmother of Italian or Greek background.
