How to Write a Budget #mgtab

How to Write a Budget (Washington DC style) by Nancy Radke

1. Look at how much you spent last year.
2. Add a percentage to that amount, say 10%.
3. Take the new figure and call it the baseline.
4. If anyone wants to go below the baseline, it is called a “cut,” even when it doesn’t reach back to the amount you spent last year.
5. You “add” the money you need next year to the baseline. Thus you can increase your amount 30%, but only claim you increased it 20%.
6. If you need more money, print it. (State governments can’t print money, so most don’t use baseline budgeting.)

Since the rest of us can’t handle our finances like this, we believe politicians when they yell about someone making a cut in their favorite program. It is why government budgets always seem to grow, never shrink, even when they “cut” something.

I used to write out a budget, but gave it up as a useless exercise. If I don’t have the money, I don’t spend it.

In my book, Spirit of a Champion, the heroine, Stormy, had cut up her credit cards so she wouldn’t use them, then runs out of money while trying to save her brother’s life in Las Vegas. Kyle, my generous hero, offers to help, but later doubts her story when he sees her staying in an expensive hotel, and driving a new car around. She says her first car blew up, and her cousin loaned her the second one. Where did she get the money? Can he believe her wild story, that someone is trying to kill her? And what can he do when the killers try again?

This book links characters from an earlier novel in this series, Scorpion’s Trail.

Nancy Radke

Nancy Radke grew up on a wheat and cattle ranch in SE Washinton State. She attended a one-room country school through the eighth grade. She learned to ride bareback at age 3 (Really! It was a common practice.) and when she got off or fell off, she would pull her horse’s nose to the ground, get on behind its ears, and the horse would lift its head so she could scoot down onto its back. She spent most of her childhood exploring the Blue Mountain trails that bordered the ranchlands. She and a friend once took a trail that turned out to be a two day trip. They always rode with matches and pocket knives, so made camp and returned the next day. These long rides worried her parents, but provided plenty of time to make up stories. Her first novel was set in the Blues, and is entitled APPALOOSA BLUES. TURNAGAIN LOVE was the first one published. It rated a four star review from Affaire de Coeur. Scribes World said “Turnagain Love has some fascinating twists and turns, unexpected complications, and charming scenes.” It is light and humorous.

Baby Boomers Downsize w/Tiny Homes #mgtab #Blog #EmptyNest #Style

Downsizing in 2015

Many of the so- called baby boomer era are facing empty nesters’ syndrome. That is to say, their once boisterous, happy homes are now quiet wastelands of space.

According to CIGNA HealthCare, family life cycles have five stages:

  1. Independence from your parents
  2. Settling down with a partner
  3. Becoming a parent to your own children
  4. Launching your adult children into their own independence stage
  5. Your retirement years

There has been an upsurge in the housing market, which in turn, has led to many couples who are coming into their retirement years, selling their homes and either moving into condos, tiny homes, like the one pictured above, or RV’s.

We chose the latter route. With our daughter grown and hundreds of miles away, we found ourselves alone and lonely in a five bedroom bi-level that was much too big. My mother had a suite downstairs, but most of the time it felt like we were simply keeping the dust bunnies company.

There are RV resorts all over Canada and the United States that cater to year round travelers. Some are very fancy with golfing, pools, tennis courts, and fitness rooms:

And others offer the wilderness in all its glory:

Our new home may not be thirteen hundred square feet, but it can take us to places we’ve never seen before.

And maybe even relieve some of that, ‘What are we going to do without our kids?’ feeling we all go through sooner or later.

How about you? What do you do to relieve that empty nester’s syndrome?

Laurel Thomas has always experienced life from the outside looking in. She likes the warm welcome she’s received in Tidal Falls and wants to make a home in this friendly little town, far away from her egocentric family. Never Vacuum Again!

(Or…I’d Rather be Reading a Great Book!)
by Kathryn Johnson
“There’s never enough time in the day!” How often have you said that? I say that all the time.

Every day is just as busy for me as it is for you. We may have different jobs or routines, different professional or personal obligations. But we all feel as if we could use help managing our time to enable us to do the things we enjoy.

A few months ago, our vacuum cleaner died. I went on a frantic search for a replacement. Only to discover how expensive any of the highly rated ones had become. Yes, I could buy a cheap one, but would it last more than a few months? We have the usual dirt tracked in on my gardening shoes, and then there’s the cat. Fur: the evil abomination of vacuum cleaners. And then it struck me…those ads I’d seen for cute little robot vacuums. One of those, if it was effective, would not only clean my floors—it would buy me more time for reading, or for writing my books. Hmmm….more research.
I found a few brands that were highly rated. The top 5 on one review site were:

iRobot Roomba 880
Neato iBotvac
Samsung POWERbot
bObsweep bObi
Miele Scout
Prices ranged from $319. to $800. Whoa! Pretty pricey. But the much touted Dysons were up in the stratosphere too. And they didn’t do the work for you.

I ended up purchasing the Roomba 880 after reading still more reviews. Check out his photo as he’s cleaning my balcony. Isn’t he cute!

Not everyone loves these machines. Some people seem to have trouble with one thing or another, or report them breaking down after a few months. I can only say that I love my little bot. He scoots around and sings out to me when he’s finished cleaning the room. And…the best thing of all: I get to finish writing another chapter of my latest book!

When Kathryn isn’t cuddling her fur-producing cat, Tempest, she’s writing books like her Affairs of State romantic-suspense series—featuring the exciting Mercy O’Brien.DSC_0102
