A Holly Jolly Christmas by Mona Risk

The holiday season has officially started. For Christians, it’s the Advent and the joyous preparations to celebrate Jesus’ Birth. For Jewish, it’s the Hanukkah and lighting of the Menorah. Both traditionally happy celebrations.

I am not trying to depress you, but being a realistic person, let me ask you, what if the coming days are not particularly happy? One of our dear friends lost her husband this week. I wonder how her holiday will turn. Another friend just had open-heart surgery and four by-passes. We hope he will recover soon. Oops, sorry if I’ve depressed you. Not my intention. Life is not always rosy.

In my story, Holly Jolly Christmas, the heroine’s father is very sick. He knows his days are numbered, and he fight hard to build as many happy memories for his family as he can. His Christmas must be a Holly Jolly Christmas. And it does. Even after he passes, he leaves a last letter to his wife Barbara, and his five daughters–a legacy of hope and clear encouragements.

Dear Family:
Life MUST continue. Claire and Tiffany, I count on you to ace your studies and go to college. Roxanne and Madelyn, do your best at work, but remember that a career is not enough to fill a heart. You need a loving partner. Heather and Jeff, take good care of your baby. Barbara, you need to learn to live again. Loneliness is not good.

HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS is my contribution to the USA Today bestseller anthology, LOVE, CHRISTMAS. You’ll love this heartwarming collection of 20 all-new Christmas stories from NY Times, USA Today, and national best-selling authors. Every title in the set is from a well-known Christmas carol and we hope while reading these delightful stories, they will put a song in your heart.14481843_10207545069410046_3314279722083324058_o

So This is Christmas by Denise Devine – From the Love, Christmas Boxed Set #mgtab #holidayromance

so-this-is-christmas_denise-devineSo This is Christmas is one of the twenty stories included the Love, Christmas boxed set.

I picked the title So This is Christmas, by John Lennon, because I have always loved this song. The passionate lyrics and melancholy tone is reflective of the man himself. Listening to words, I get the feeling he’s pouring his innermost thoughts on the paper as he writes. It’s Christmas, another year has ended and you’re about to start another one. So, what have you done in the past year? Have you accomplished anything worthwhile?

The main character in my story, Annabelle Lee, does a bit of reflecting on the past herself. She’s given up everything to build her photography business and it’s going well, but lately she has begun to wonder if it was really worth the sacrifice. Her annual Christmas weekend with her best friends—the girls she’s known most of her life—is coming up, so she decides to arrive at the cabin a few days early to relax in front of a crackling fire, sip wine and contemplate her future. When she arrives, however, things don’t turn out the way she has planned.

But, then, do they ever?

Annabelle Lee—She’s looking forward to a weekend of catching up, munching cookies and enjoying Christmas cheer with her childhood girlfriends. She hasn’t had a vacation since this time last year and desperately needs the time off. Her business has taken a toll on her life, leaving her exhausted and questioning the price of success. She arrives early at Ellie Stone’s family cabin to relax and decide the direction of her future, but to her dismay, she’s not alone. Ellie’s twin brother is also there and declares he isn’t leaving until Friday.

Christopher Stone—He’s the boy who mercilessly teased her when they were kids. He’s grown into a handsome man with a career in professional baseball and a pop-star girlfriend. He appears to have an idyllic life, but the longer they talk, the more Annabelle suspects his love life isn’t as perfect as he claims. She can’t deny her attraction to him and knows he’s attracted to her as well.

Best Friends Forever—Will this week proceed like old times or turn out to be the beginning of a new chapter in her life?

Last Christmas from Love, Christmas @JoanReeves #mgtab

Cover of Last Christmas by Joan ReevesLast Christmas has always been one of my favorite holiday songs. Earlier this year, we ran a contest with Fresh Fiction and asked entrants to name their favorite holiday song–a classic carol or a popular song.

We authors had chosen a favorite song in advance. The first person to name the author’s song became the reader to which the author dedicated her novella.

My song was Last Christmas, made popular by Wham and recorded most recently by Taylor Swift. Several readers listed the song as a favorite, but Corissa Palfrey was the first to list it. So Last Christmas, my holiday romance in the Love, Christmas Collection, is dedicated to Corissa.

Why I Chose Last Christmas

I’ve always liked Last Christmas because the song is a study in contrast. The lyrics are poignant, but the rock and roll beat and tune don’t make you feel tearful and sad as so many Christmas songs do. When Last Christmas plays, you want to snap your fingers and tap your feet.

Further analysis shows that the song is actually one of optimism and personal growth. In the song, a girl gave her love unwisely to a man who didn’t value it, but she learned from the experience. That’s why this Christmas, she’s going to give her heart to someone special!

What If…

Every woman has probably had her heart broken at some time or other. The lyrics for Last Christmas fired my imagination and the story nearly told itself: a woman fell for a man and gave her heart to him. After a few days, he simply vanished!

Ever been told, “I’ll call you,” but the phone never rings–no matter how long you wait!

Sign says RetaliationWhat if the two lovers meet again?

What if he wants to rekindle the romance?

What if she wants to make him pay for breaking her heart?

Haven’t we all had similar fantasies of getting redress when wronged?

Last Christmas Annabelle Cooper fell in love at first sight with a mysterious stranger. After a week of unforgettable passion, he walked out of her life with a promise to call her later.

ab_lc_lastchristmas_01_webA year of heartache accompanied by the dirty tricks life can serve up finds Annabelle back in her hometown, determined to forget the man who still haunts her dreams.

Who should walk into her grandmother’s Christmas party? Why the man who seduced her, lied to her, and betrayed her! He has a new name and a new identity, but his effect on Annabelle is as old as time.

Rick Lassiter thinks–hopes–he can woo Annabelle back to him–and his bed. But, he didn’t count on the passionate sweet-tempered woman he remembered as having a will as strong as his and a desire to make him pay for breaking her heart.

Rick wants redemption, but Annabelle has revenge in mind.

Love, Christmas: Songs of Christmas – Let It Snow

put-a-song-in-your-heartLet it snow! is a song to remind us of all that holiday joy!

All those wonderful, heart-warming Christmas songs, from carols to old time favorites sung by crooners from the 50s, will be playing on the radio or in your own personal digital mix soon. My all-time favorite winter holiday song is–you’ve got it–Let It Snow!

When I was a kid, we used to gather for big family dinners on Christmas day that lasted all day long. They were merry affairs from beginning to end. One of my favorite memories from these times is of my Aunt Charlene who would sing along with the songs playing on the stereo. Her favorite, and now mine, was Let It Snow. One Christmas especially she sang and I joined in. She hugged me to her side and felt warm and soft, the smells of Christmas tree and roast turkey and cinnamon filled me. As we sang we watched the beautiful white flakes fall outside onto a gentle blanket of snow. Oh how cozy and warm and wonderful I felt inside!  The glow of those times and that song never left me. I feel it every time I watch it snow outside and every time I hear the song Let It Snow.

Fast forward to now and I’m super excited to be part of a Christmas romance collection celebrating the songs of Christmas with my story titled Let It Snow. I’m sharing the fun with a reader who also loves this song, by dedicating my book to her–Patty Curry. May this story bring as much holiday joy to your heart as the song.

Look for Love, Christmas on pre-order now to share in the warmth and the spirit of the songs, the stories and the holiday!
