Happy Turkey Day! Time to eat too much and time to be grateful!

Turns out Thanksgiving isn’t the only time of year we should reflect and take stock of all the positive things in our lives. In fact, there is scientific proof that being grateful is just plain good for you. According to some “gratitude” researchers, here are some ways to integrate scientifically endorsed gratitude into your life.

Write Down What You’re Grateful For.

Begin your day by listing ten things that you are grateful for. A wise friend told me that when I was facing some seemingly insurmountable problems.  At first I thought she was crazy.  The last thing I felt at the moment was gratitude.  But, I tried it.  At first I could only get to four or five things that I was grateful for but within days I was having difficulty stopping at ten.  It’s now become such an ingrained habit that I not only start the day but I also end it by silently making my “gratitude lists”.

Gratitude researchers confirm I was on track. They’ve discovered those who keep at gratitude journals exercise more regularly, reported fewer physical symptoms, felt better about their lives as a whole, and were generally more optimistic about the upcoming week—compared to their negatively focused counterparts.

Even a Single Act of Kindness Can Go a Long Way.

Every act of gratitude counts. It can be as small as saying thank you or telling someone important how much they mean to you. Scientists studying positive psychology found that a one-time act of thoughtful gratitude produced an immediate 10% increase in happiness and 35% reduction in depressive symptoms. The happy effects disappeared within three to six months which shows that gratitude is an act to be repeated again and again.

Want to improve your love life?  Tell your partner you’re grateful he/she is in your life!

While being grateful is good for you, being on the receiving end of it can do wonders for your romantic relationships! A recent study found that after receiving gratitude, participants noticed that their partner was more responsive to their needs and overall more satisfied with their relationship. Gratitude was shown to have had a long-term effect that was seen six to nine months later.

So, yes by all means eat anything you want on Turkey Day.  Why not? But most of all, as you sit down to the fabulous feast, be grateful for all the wonderful things in your life.  And please know how grateful I am that you are in my life.  I’m grateful that my stories come alive in my imagination in mystical ways.  But the real magic happens when my readers open the books and enter the worlds I created. Talk about squaring a magical circle.  Many thanks!
