The SEAL’s Temptation

Wounded Hearts Book 7

by Jacquie Biggar

Genre: Romantic Suspense

I’m thrilled to share my new release with you today!

It’s been four years since I’ve written anything in the Wounded Hearts world, so you can see why I’m excited to get back to these characters who have become old friends over the years ๐Ÿ™‚

DEA Agent Magdalena Holt is one of my favorite characters. She has high moral standards and is willing to place her life on the line for those she deems vulnerable.

In Maggie’s Revenge, Maggie was captive of a high-ranking official in the Sinaloa cartel. She’d gone undercover in order to discover why young women (sex trade workers) were going missing amid a spreading opioid crisis. It takes everything she has to escape the clutches of her nemesis, leaving her battered and broken.

The SEAL’s Temptation opens on SEAL Chief Frank Stein’s ranch where the DEA team has come to recuperate.

Exclusive Excerpt

Frank Stein sat at the scarred wooden dinner table that had graced his family home since long before he was born. The combined aromas of roasted turkey, sage stuffing, garlic mashed potatoes and poultry gravy had his mouth watering and stomach growling. No one cooked better than his momma.

On his right, best friend, Jared Martin and wife Annie, visited with Frankโ€™s mother, Emily, and her new beau, Spencer, while Adam and his boss bickered in the background, but it was the silent woman on his left that commanded his attention.

Magdalena Holt.

His fascination with the mysterious DEA agent had grown almost embarrassingly obvious to everyone, it seemed, except her. She was too focused on stopping an international human trafficking ring to worry about his tender feelings.

Emilyโ€™s black lab, Sugar, lounged on the floor at Maggieโ€™s feet, as though he sensed her underlying torment. Every now and then, Frank caught her sneaking a piece of meat to the dog, but he pretended not to notice. She could give the animal the whole damn bird if it made her feel better.

Her recent abduction left him angry and helpless. The vibrant, commanding agent heโ€™d met months ago, when Jared called from Las Vegas asking for help, was nowhere to be seen in the timid, pale imitation sitting at a table full of laughing, chattering friends.

The dark place in his head wanted to reach out and shake her silly. How could she have allowed herself to be placed in danger that way? At the same time, his arms ached from the restraint he placed on himself not to grab hold and never let go. Heโ€™d gladly protect her with his life.

But, that was the problem; she didnโ€™t need him. She never had.

And to prove his pointโ€ฆ

โ€œHey, Mags, any word on the girl you saved from that crash?โ€ Her partner, Adam, turned his mega-watt smile her way and grasped the fingers fiddling with her fork instead of eating.

โ€œHmm?โ€ she murmured, the low hum sending vibrations through Frankโ€™s gut, and lower. โ€œMolly? No, but the hospital promised to keep me informed.โ€ She gave a faint smile. โ€œThanks for helping her parents with the repatriation order. I was worried sheโ€™d have to remain in Mexico over Easter until trial was set.โ€

He gave her a warm hug, his blond hair a stark contrast to the inky darkness of Maggieโ€™s. Frank wanted to rip them apart. Not a good reaction for a SEAL Chief, even if he was retired. He had no right to feel jealous. Maggie had never shown any sign of interestโ€”it was all wishful thinking on his part. Which was ridiculous. He was a thirty-seven-year-old war veteran acting like a kid wet behind the ears with his first crush.

DEA Agent Maggie Holt knows what Hell is likeโ€ฆ

After eighteen months undercover in a Mexican cartel, Maggie is broken. The kickass agent she once was, is gone, leaving her riddled with guilt and nightmares. Forced to take paid leave, Maggie accepts the offer of a vacation on the ranch of the man whoโ€™d rescued her from an almost certain death.

Frank Stein knows the signs of PTSD, heโ€™s suffered the symptoms himself as Chief Petty Officer of SEAL Team Five. Honorably discharged from duty, Frank has found peace at the family ranch and hopes it will do the same for Magdalena. Ever since heโ€™d first met her when she was interrogating his buddy, Jared, Frank has been fascinated by the raven-haired beauty and wants the chance to see where their relationship could go.

Adam Oโ€™Connor is Maggieโ€™s partner. He knows her. He loved her once and could again, if sheโ€™d let him in. But heโ€™s also angry she took the chances she did by going undercover against orders. And now, things are different. Sheโ€™s different.

When a right-wing militia group infiltrates the area, will DEA Agent Maggie Holt, her partner, Adam Oโ€™Connor, and ex-SEAL Chief Frank Stein be able to set aside their differences to stop them before someone dies? And who will Maggie choose, the handsome cowboy, or her charismatic DEA partner?

Maggie stared at the evening sky, fingers clenching and unclenching in the folds of the blanket around her shoulders. She was almost preternaturally aware of the man sitting like a silent guardian in the too-small rocker a few feet away.

Desperate to break what felt like an awkward silence, she gestured toward the sparkling constellations over their heads. โ€œDo you study the stars, Mr. Stein? You have quite the view out here.โ€ Maybe not as reach-out-and-touch them as sheโ€™d felt on that mesa in Mexico, but a hell of a lot safer. The melancholy that was never very far away filled her chest, a black cloud covering the silvery moon. Her best friend was buried on that hill, a victim of the monster whoโ€™d ruined the lives of countless women.

โ€œNot really. My brother and I got into it some as kids but then heโ€ฆ disappeared and I kind of lost heart.โ€ Frankโ€™s voice flowed over her like a warm breeze, dispersing the darkness of her thoughts.

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry,โ€ she murmured. โ€œI think I remember reading something about that in your fileโ€”the part that wasnโ€™t confidential anyway.โ€ She smiled.

He nodded. โ€œIt happened a long time ago. Weโ€™ve accepted it, though thatโ€™s not to say weโ€™ve stopped looking. Hope lives on, you know?โ€

Yeah, she did.

The only thing that kept her alive through those hellish months with Chenglei and his band of assholes was hope.

Well, that and a craving for revenge.

Series or Standalones

That was the question posed by a member of The Story Empire earlier this week. You can read his full thoughts here– well worth your time.

I’ve read many great standalone books, (Cinderella anyone?) but have to admit I enjoy stories set in a series much more. There’s a deeper connection to a) the characters, and b) location- though either of those can, and often do, change throughout the course of a series.

From NY Book Editors:

Writing a book series can be incredibly challenging (thatโ€™s the bad news), but itโ€™s also one of the best ways to develop a loyal fan base (thatโ€™s the good news).

NY Book Editors-2016

The books can follow one or two main characters through a variety of adventures- such as J.D. Robb’s In Death series or the Harry Potter franchise.

They can also be set around a location and the citizens within- Susan Mallery’s Fools Gold series or J.R Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Some follow a progression of events and are best read in order, while others are self-contained stories within the series and can easily be read out of order.

Whichever style you prefer, series seem to be growing in popularity, some are even twenty books long and counting!, and readers can’t get enough.

Iโ€™m currently working on the third story in my Gambling Hearts series, My Girl. The series follows the lives, and loves, of three siblings born and raised on a Texas hill country ranch.

This is Aaronโ€™s story:

Sometimes, the right decision isnโ€™t the easiest one to make

Trish Sylvester knows her family and when they accept a week long stay at a rustic dude ranch, she is concerned- especially since itโ€™s at her exโ€™s home.

Aaron is overjoyed at the opening of his familyโ€™s guest ranch, until he learns their first guest is his ex-girlfriend, her parentsโ€“and a fiancรฉ.

And that isnโ€™t the only surprise.

Excerpt

โ€œI met your fiancรฉ,โ€ he said, his voice ripe with challenge. The outdoors clung to her skin, sun and flowers combining to intoxicate him more than the whiskey.

She lifted her chin, eyes narrowing. โ€œWhat did you say to him, Aaron? Iโ€™d hoped we could all act like adults while weโ€™re here.โ€

Aaron laughed, his hands doing the job his heart urged him to do, forcing her to come up against his chest with a soft oomph. โ€œDarlinโ€™, Iโ€™m definitely a man, make no mistake.โ€ He leaned down and brushed her lips, setting up a warning through his chest. He was playing with fire, and if he wasnโ€™t careful, there was little doubt who was going to get burned. Again.

โ€œAaron, stop this,โ€ she murmured, though her lips parted on a sigh. โ€œWe canโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

He lifted his head and stared at her upturned face. โ€œCanโ€™t what, Trish? You invited yourself onto my territory and brought reinforcements. I want to know why.โ€

She moved out of his arms. He pretended not to feel the loss.

โ€œWe needed a break from the city,โ€ she said. โ€œSurely, you can understand that? Your sister sent an email to me highlighting the new business ventureโ€”congrats, by the wayโ€”and I thought it would be fun to come and check it out. End of story.โ€

He eyed her nervously tucking her hair behind her ear and knew she was bluffing. The question remained; why?

Danger & Romance, the Beachcomber Investigations Way

ย Beachcomber Danger, the 8th book in the Beachcomber Investigations romantic detective series is now out! ย I’m just as proud of this baby as I was of the first. So far reviewers agree.

If you like a little danger with your romance, this is the series for you. Set on Martha’s Vineyard, ex-special ops legend Dane Blaise wrestles (literally!) with his attraction to bombshell ex-Scotland Yard detective, Shana George. Along the way, their assignments involve kicking some badasses while they manage to keep each other from harm–or at least they manage to stay alive.

Each book can be read as a stand-alone, but I always love reading a series in order. (You could start with the box set of the first four books HERE.)

But today I’m celebrating the Newest Baby: Beachcomber Danger

Hereโ€™s the tab:

The trouble with being stupid-in-love is that it makes you stupid. And you have your whole world to loseโ€ฆ

Dane Blaise was once a special ops legend, so heโ€™d been in danger before.
But not like this. This time it counted for all the marbles.

Shana was not going to let Dane take on this assignment without her, though she knew he wanted to. The stakes were off-the-charts high. This was about saving the President. And there was no way she would let him shield her from the dangerous consequences.

The only problem was, when someone was out to assassinate the President of the United States, things got complicated. They had a way of spiraling out of a manโ€™s control until legendary status meant shit.

And in the end, there was nothing left but you fighting for the life of the one you loved mostโ€ฆ

Excerpt from Beachcomber Danger:

Chapter 1

They were blessedly alone at this ungodly hour of the morning. Dane ran behind Shana along State Beach, mostly for the view of her backside. He could catch her and pass her if heโ€™d wanted to. Sweat trickled down his temples and he bent his head to wipe the sweat off on his sleeve. When he did, he caught a glimpse of a moving car out of the corner of his eye.

He turned his head only slightly to see two men in a gray sedan creeping along the road about fifty yards behind, tracking them.

Picking up his pace, he caught up to Shana. ย Ever the competitor, she speeded up to try and stay ahead of him. Before she got too far, he managed to snag her t-shirt, almost tearing it from her shoulder. She slowed and swung around, pulling the shirt back on while she scowled at him.

She was about to protest but he quieted her with a look and hauled her in close. He didnโ€™t want it to be obvious to the men in the car that heโ€™d made them. He had no idea who they were or what they were up to, but it was scalded into his DNA by now to be cagey. Never play it straight.

He put an arm around Shanaโ€™s sweaty body, enjoyed the effects of running with the heat and humidity of the day rising, and nuzzled her ear while he whispered.

โ€œTwo men in dark glasses and suits are following us in a non-descript sedan. What does that tell you?โ€

โ€œAre you in trouble with the feds?โ€ It was both good and bad that she stopped squirming in his arms.

โ€œNo.โ€

He thought for a moment, running his mind in reverse back to the last time heโ€™d had a run-in with a federal law enforcement agency. The ATF. One of their agents had been bad and they hadnโ€™t been thrilled that Dane had been the one to discover this fact. But the man had killed their clientโ€™s husband and Dane and Shana had nailed him with a recorded confession and a gun aimed squarely at him with intent to kill. No one was happy about that mess. As a reward for uncovering the ATF agentโ€™s drug ring, Dane had been threatened with imprisonment for his so-called interference that theyโ€™d insisted labeling as obstruction of justice. But that fiasco ended a while back with a truce.

โ€œThen whatโ€™s it about?โ€ Her scowl changed over to something more loving, not worry, not yet.

โ€œIโ€™m hoping it has nothing to do with the Presidentโ€™s upcoming vacation on Marthaโ€™s Vineyard, but Iโ€™m not that optimistic.โ€

She stood stock still now and looked at him.

โ€œDo you think they want us toโ€”โ€œ

โ€œNo. I think they think weโ€™re suspicious characters and theyโ€™re keeping an eye on us.โ€

She slapped his arm and took off at a sprint before he could stop her. Damn.

Now heโ€™d have to catch up with her. And heโ€™d have to acknowledge that she was probably right. The feds, likely secret service, wanted something from himโ€”from them. He needed to remember he wasnโ€™t in this alone. And never would be again.
