Suffering From Infobesity? by @JoanReeves #mgtab

Infobesity is a word created by James Morris of the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science.

Even though it’s a “made up” word, infobesity, the tendency to keep reading, visiting social media, and scanning the internet for more, more, and more information is a very real thing.

Infobesity is caused by FOMO, the Fear Of Missing OUT.

Life Informs Writing

I guess I’m talking about this today because I’ve been mostly away since the beginning of March. Currently, I’m using a hot spot created by my cell phone to write this post. I have one eye on the data meter to make sure I don’t go over my allotted gigabytes and the other eye on the laptop monitor screen.

I’ve been suffering from FOMO for almost 3 weeks. Yikes. It really is a real thing!

If you’re drowning in digital data? Scared by social media? Finding internet life a big time suck, and suffering from FOMO, just know you’re not alone.

Many internet users are overwhelmed by the never-ending flood of information—especially if you find yourself spending a lot of time on social media.

Multitasking online—swiftly going back and forth from one task to another and another—can cause a serious drop in your productivity. That’s called information fatigue syndrome. I definitely feel that sometimes.

What To Do

If you’re scared you’ll miss out on something essential to your life, you probably need to take command of the situation before it takes command of you.

1. Change to focusing on one thing at a time, rather than trying to multitask. You’ll accomplish more, and what you do will probably be correct than error-ridden.

2. Decide what’s important and refuse to look at information that doesn’t help you move forward with your goals.

3. Follow only those people and websites that support your goals, and make that your policy about subscribing to newsletters, blogs, etc.

4. If you need to do something important—like write a book or a job proposal—silence your cell phone alerts and notifications and do the same with any alerts and notifications on your computer.

5. Overcome the idea that you have to be wired in 24/7. Give your brain a break and disconnect every evening and on weekends. At least pick one day to be offline.

6. Read something that will sweep you away and relax you. Reading lowers blood pressure and is good for the brain in many ways.

A Year Later

I hope you all had a wonderful Valentine Day.

While we celebrated Valentine Day in our special way with loved ones, family or friends, the teenagers of Parkland held a day of remembrance to pray for their lost friends and promise they will never forget them. My grandchildren live in Parkland and were a mile away in their own school when the shooting took place.

One of the survivors, a lovely young woman only 17 last year, was interviewed in the Parkland Lifestyle magazine and explained how she overcame the trauma and her fears. She needed to show the world that this drama could not be repeated again. I was so impressed by the article I’d like to share some of its thoughts with you.

The day after, this MSD senior talked to her congresswoman and organized a march. “This happened at my high school. I had to do something. I’d wake up at 6 a.m. and slept at 2 a.m. I made so many phone calls. I contacted the bus companies, the parents, chaperones, reached out to the Civic Center in Tallahassee, organized cots from the Red Cross… “

Many more marches followed in the “Road to Change”. Those young people, not even 18 yet, explained they didn’t want to take guns away. They had conversations about extreme risk protection orders or universal background check or disarming domestic abusers. People would say, “Oh I can get behind that.”

People were receptive and the students felt America was behind them to protect the children in school. It’s amazing how fear can create courage.

This is not a political post, but a salute to my grandchildren, their classmates, friends and team members from various sports and activities.

You are still very young but you can make our world a better place.

A Celebration!

On January 16th, I marked a milestone with my 40th book was published! It’s hard to believe that I have now officially published FORTY books!! Rescued, Heal Me Series, Book 4 was released that day and it marks the big occasion!!! I must admit that I have even surprised myself with this!

It’s exciting to think of all the stories that I have released and how many more I still have to write! Who would have thought that back in October 2010 when I came up with my first plot, that I would ever continue writing, much less write over 40!!!

The first year I published (2011), I released two (My Blood Runs Blue & Blue Blood for Life). In 2017, I published 18 with the help of my thirteen book Celebration Series. Right there is half of my published books in two of those years.

With each release, I find myself more humbled by the number of people who download a copy and reach out to tell me how much they enjoyed the story. I am truly humled and so happy that I can touch so many people with my writing and look forward to the future!

Now, how long do you think it will take me to hit 50 books published?

Word Spinning on the Road!

Last weekend, my husband and I took a day trip (from Oregon) to Washington. He was driving, so I figured I’d work on the two novellas I have due in March. Of course, my brain split focus and distracted me with ideas and scenarios for a third story! The more the merrier, I guess.

I opened a file (turned to the first page of notebook paper in my dollar store binder) and started entering data (writing with pen). When my inspiration evaporated, I fast-forwarded (dog-eared a dozen pages or so) and wrote the title of my next WIP (Work In Process), automatically date stamping, titling, and page numbering each sheet.

I realized a few interesting things during the trip. First, my cursive writing has degenerated. I could barely read it! I switched to printing. Not too bad, but not neat and consistent as it was in high school or my early invoice-writing days. I think typing has atrophied the fine motor skills required to produce the round and rhythmic script my elementary school teachers worked so hard to get me to master.

After penning my first blast of ideas on paper, I did something I had to laugh at. My ring fingers automatically reached down to hit control and s keys at the same time: the shortcut to saving a file. Not a keyboard in the truck other than our smartphones, but my well-conditioned (experienced?) brain wanted to make sure data wasn’t lost. Backing up my work? That would have to be a quick snapshot of each page, just in case I lost (as in misplaced) the in process manuscript before transcribing it to Word and saving in Dropbox.

And that’s how this author writes on the road.

How about a sweet romance with a surprise ending? Check out THREE ARE ONE, part of SWEET AND SASSY BRIDES.

Looking for a few great books for this weekend? I have loads of stories Free to Read with Kindle Unlimited or you can download one or both of these Single Daddy Club stories by Donna Fasano. I’m curious to know if Team Jason is more popular or do readers favor Team Reece. Either way, once you’ve finished reading, remember to write a review: the best way to thank an author and let her know what you like about her work.

*Remember: Book Bites are always FREE! Enjoy the first chapter of scores of stories by The Authors’ Billboard writers. A comprehensive list of books is here but the books are also available on Nook, Kobo and Apple.
