“We are the land … that is the fundamental idea embedded in Native American life. The Earth is the mind of the people as we are the mind of the earth. The land is not really the place (separate from ourselves) where we act out the drama of our isolate destinies. It is not a means of survival, a setting for our affairs … It is rather a part of our being, dynamic, significant, real. It is our self …” ~ Paula Gunn Allen, Laguna Pueblo (found in We Are The Land: Native American Views of Nature)
I have always been enamored by the attitudes of the Native American peoples regarding nature. And although there are many different Native American cultures with many different views on nature, there is at least one commonality.
- Nature deserves reverence and respect.
My fascination with Native American life and culture subsequently led me to write a series of contemporary romance novels called the Black Bear Brothers. I set the books on a fictitious reservation and I’ve even made up a tribe called the Kolheek so that I didn’t offend anyone by “getting it wrong.” This series is a tribute to my love of Native American life and culture, and I hope readers will enjoy the stories as much as I enjoyed writing them.
About the Black Bear Brothers series:
Makwa men are solid, trustworthy, and above reproach. Mat. Dakota. Chay.
Three men successfully making their way in the world… until each is hit with an unexpected tragedy that sends him reeling. Mat receives an overwhelming responsibility. Dakota is struck by a shocking betrayal. And Chay experiences a nightmarish crisis.
One by one, the men return to Misty Glen Reservation—the place they were raised by their shaman grandfather. Home… where the story begins.
