#Hold On To The Light: Lingering Pain by Jennifer St. Giles

Emotional, Physical, Spiritual, Mental—no matter what part of you the demon of pain strikes, it will drive you to your knees and make you want to do anything to escape its hold on you. Whatever its source, be it trauma from war, abuse from others, a victim of crime, physical disease, mental disease, grief and loss, depression, social isolation and bullying, the demon of pain is real, long lasting, and determined to defeat even the strongest of men. This demon makes you think you are alone, that no one else in humanity has ever suffered as badly. This demon of pain makes you believe he is eternal and you will forever be enslaved to his darkness. This demon of pain grows more intense, bigger, and darker every day and often makes his strikes in the vulnerable hours of the night. Man, woman, child, young or old, this demon does not care who he destroys.

How can this demon be defeated?

Don’t believe the lies pain tells you. You are not alone in this world, or in this universe. There are many out there suffering just as you are. Find them. There is an army ready to help you fight. Join that army. Pain is not invincible and is not eternal. There is armor that can shield you and weapons that can help you battle pain. Arm yourself and fight. You can end your slavery to its darkness by focusing on hope, love, and light. You can defeat him. Or you can contain him from ruling your world.

I know lingering pain and have to fight this demon every day. I write about characters who battle their own pain. Hope and love always conquers the darkness. You can check them out at jenniferstgiles.com. One of the best songs I know that speaks to pain is Tell Your Heart to Beat Again by Danny Gokey. Sometimes breaking the chain of pain is just breathing and embracing life, no matter how imperfect and hard it is.

Check out the words to his song.

Tell Your Heart to Beat Again by Danny Gokey

You’re shattered
Like you’ve never been before
The life you knew
In a thousand pieces on the floor
And words fall short in times like these
When this world drives you to your knees
You think you’re never gonna get back
To the you that used to be
Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday’s a closing door
You don’t live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you’ve been
And tell your heart to beat again
Beginning
Just let that word wash over you
It’s alright now
Love’s healing hands have pulled you through
So get back up, take step one
Leave the darkness, feel the sun
Cause your story’s far from over
And your journey’s just begun
Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday’s a closing door
You don’t live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you’ve been
And tell your heart to beat again
Let every heartbreak
And every scar
Be a picture that reminds you
Who has carried you this far
‘Cause love sees farther than you ever could
In this moment heaven’s working
Everything for your good
Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday’s a closing door
You don’t live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you’ve been
And tell your heart to beat again
Your heart to beat again
Beat again
Oh, so tell your heart to beat again
