A Vote for Podcasts

PodcastsLet’s talk podcasts. As you probably already know, I walk every morning for about two hours. Because all that walking can easily become thought-numbing, I knew I had to come up with a way to compensate. What’s the answer? Well, I offer a vote for podcasts. Listening to podcasts is one of my favorite ways to occupy my mind while I’m racking up those steps. I’m always searching for interesting podcasts to add to my list.

It’s not necessary to be a fitness nerd to enjoy podcasts. You can listen to them while doing chores or while running errands, while sitting and enjoying a sunny day or while lounging in bed on a rainy night. I’m sure you get the idea. Podcasts are perfect anytime.

Here are some of my favorites:

This American Life – Ira Glass created this popular weekly podcast that bills itself as “journalism built around plot.” I enjoy the compelling human interest stories and I’m often surprised by the interesting subjects and surprising plot twists. This podcast has 2.2 million weekly listeners. This amazing show is probably the biggest reason I give a vote for podcasts.

Strangers – Produced and hosted by Peabody award-winner Lea Thau, Strangers is a storytelling podcast featuring true stories that never fails to make me think. I enjoy the interesting themes and I think it’s well worth the time to listen.

Serial – An investigative journalism podcast hosted by Sarah Koenig. Season 1 features the story of Adnan Syed who was convicted of the murder of Hae Min Lee in February 2000. The case on-going case is fascinating. (Note: On March 29, 2018, The Maryland Court of Special Appeals has ordered a new trial for Syed.)

S-Town – Hosted by Brian Reed, S-Town is the story of John McLemore, a man from a wealthy family who despises his Alabama home town. This is an absolutely fascinating story and, most noteworthy, it ended at a place I never imagined it would.

These are just a few of the podcasts I’ve listened to. Give them a try and you’ll soon be offering a vote for podcasts, too. Are you a fan of podcasts? If so, what are your favorite podcasts? Leave a comment with the title of your favorites and I promise to give them a listen.
